Listening recently to Aina Calvo, Mayoress of Palma in a radio
interview, I could not belIeve my ears.
When asked about the Centro Canino Internacional, she said everyone has the right “ al descanso,” to rest/sleep, in reference
to the one neighbour who claims not to be able to sleep at night due to the refuge.
This is incredible, because the CCI and supporters have gone to great lengths – and expense – to provide SOUNDPROOFED KENNELS for our dogs to sleep in at night.
When asked why sound readings were taken with DOORS AND WINDOWS OPEN,she seemed to evade the question, and simply replied that Palma council had taken 5 readings. Why on earth were NONE of them taken at NIGHT, or is the right to rest only relevant at 11am, which is when they WERE taken!
The CCI questions the legality of these readings for various reasons, but will now need to pay almost 3000 euros for independent readings which encompass the whole area – something we have repeatedly asked Palma council to arrange, but to no avail.
What I found really stomach churning, was when the Mayoress stated that Palma Council had offered, on several occasions, to help
the Centro Canino, but had been turned down by us.
If by HELP, she really meant the constant THREATS we have had from Palma Council, to remove our dogs from their beautiful refuge to be taken to the overcrowded municipal dog pound at Son Reus, where, dogs are destroyed after 15 days, then yes, we certainly have turned those “offers” down!
Even though we now have to pay for private kennels for the dogs who, sadly, have not been adopted, we have a responsibility to make sure they are well cared for, no matter what.
When Aina Calvo became Mayoress of Palma, some 3 years ago, according to the media, she claimed her intention was to abolish the systematic killing of abandoned dogs.
The CCI has had a NO KILL policy for over 40 years, but tragically,
thousands upon thousands of dogs and cats are still being destroyed every year in Son Reus.
The Centro Canino provides an important alternative to this. If lost, the welfare of animals on the island could be set back 50 years or more.
This is why we must continue to fight for justice – for the animals and for the people who care about them.
Please let it be known if you think the Centro Canino Internacional should be allowed to continue its work.
Julie Ford,
vice president of the centro Canino Internacional Animal Refuge
A Palma judge has ruled that our dogs must be removed AGAIN from the Centro Canino within 5 days, even though another judge had ruled they must stay! This will be fourth time in four years and the news is devastating. Even though we disagree with the ruling, and it breaks our hearts, we are forced to comply with it.
Monthly updates, articles about organised dog fighting, the fight against cruelty, news from the refuge – all this and more is covered in the News section.

There was a sale in the Pasatiempos shop, Brossa 16, Palma, in aid of the Centro Canino Internacional from October 24-28. Many thanks to everyone who supported us.
