Aina - You Have Failed Us!

AINA.jpg

Dear Friends

As I presume you might have read in the diario de Mallorca on 4 February at 8am, Palma Town Hall intends to take our dogs to Son Reus despite it being full and the dogs there being sick. Some of the older ones will have to be sacrificed to be able to take ours.

At the moment we are trying to arrange a meeting with Aina Calvo (pictured), the mayoress of Palma although as yet we haven’t received any call. This is strange considering the fact that when she was in opposition (PSOE) she supported us and even went with us to protest against Catalina Cirer over her signing a similar decree.

In any case we must recognise that this town council is utterly ‘legalistic’. It is interfering in the affairs of an association that is doing the very job the town hall itself should be doing. It is housing dogs that have been abandoned not only in Palma but over the whole Island.

Yet these dogs are being taken off en masse to die to Son Reus by our friend and animal lover Toni Mas (of Natura Park) in an air-conditioned van. What luck!

In the end materialistic interests seem to win. Now Senora Calvo and her team, who previously supported us in defending these animals, is giving in to several neighbours. Although there are only a few of them, they must be not only very ‘important’ but also all very cruel considering everything that they are doing to us.

Whatever the case may be, rest assured that this association will not allow anything bad to happen to our dogs and cats who have already suffered by being abandoned and maltreated.

We are currently maintaining contact with various national and international associations as well as with the media (TV and radio) hoping that they will support us in our endeavours not to be ‘robbed’ of our animals.
We will keep you informed of any action we are thinking of taking in the hope that you might help us.
Juan Gil

I’m an American who is currently living in London, England working for a major bank. SHAME on Palma Council for taking such a hateful course of action.
If they go ahead, I suggest we collect a decent amount of money & launch a BOYCOTT PALMA campaign both on the Internet and in Majorca itself. Lets contact all the travel firms & travel websites and let holiday makers know what cruel people the Palma Council are. We can distribute posters asking people to boycott Palma, we can signwrite cars and vans to travel around Palma & Palma airport telling holiday makers what is going on. If Palma council go ahead with this – let’s fight fire with fire.

i don’t know how this woman can sleeep at night, it is awful what she is allowing to happen to all those poor animals who through no fault of their own find themselves at the centro canino, how can she not allow those animals a second chance! Most of the dogs barking in the area are probably from all the residents who live in the area and have their dogs tied up all day and night in the garden. I hope this can all be resolved without any animal having to suffer any more than it already has.

Why don’t they understand that they will loose tourist revenue by persecuting these innocent animals. The only way to maybe make them reconsider is to push this point, after all they don’t care about the animals. There seems to be no rhymn nor reason to these so called human beings. It is the same in Greece. I wish you and the animals Good Luck. We keep on trying….

For the last week since I heard about this atrocity we have been getting together a petition to present to the council before the 15th. We have now adv ised everyone to write their comments on this forum or direct to the council as well as add their names to the petition. The peoples voice is a powerful tool, lets get behind this cause and stop the closure of the only place where these abandoned animals feel safe and are looked after. What kind of people are these neighbours who have complained, knowing that these poor animals will be destroyed. Have they no hearts? Please, anyone who reads this take 5 minutes of your time to support us, people power is the only way forward.

    Thanks

What a sad situation for these poor dogs and their carers – it’s so unfair. My best wishes are with those who are doing their best for them in a difficult situation, which is not of their making.

It is shameful, that the mayoress of Palma, before the elections stood alongside with the defenders of the animalshelter and now that she has got the “job “, boycots the whole project. Unfortunately, this is a proof that most human beings can’t be trusted ……Lets take the stand and defend these animals and the beautiful people that fight for them, so that they can live protected and in peace. Shame on the neighbours who must be heartless people. This whole situation is so unfair…..

I will never visit Palma and will advise all my friends not to do so either. When will policiticans in any country ever have the strength of mind not to always be swayed by the rich and powerful. The mayoress originally supported the centre which has obviously put an immense amount of love, work and their own money in looking after the mistreated and abandoned animals of Palma. Has she no idea at all how heartbreaking it is for animal lovers to see one dog or cat in pain ? This is not a sign of being weak but of being caring. Unfortunately she and the neighbours of the animal shelter have no compassion.

I am an American who visited Palma in April 07. I too will never visit Palma again and also advised everyone I know and all my customers not to visit Palma. Although there are wonderful caring people who give everything of themselves to help homeless, abused and neglected animals, this is something that should be done by the people and the government of Palma and not left to just a few. The responsibility to care for innocent animals is everyones and Palma Council should be helping not hindering. My tourist dollars will not help Palma and I do all I can to pass on these sentiments and stop anyone else spending their dollars there also until this government acts with compassion and humanity.
THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS TOURIST DOLLARS IS THEIRS!!!

It seems apparent to me as is always has, that the spanish as a government have no feeling or respect for animals. It seems OK for them to spent millions of euros every year on loud banging fireworks, but cannot even manage a government organised animal refuge centre, and now seem intent on not letting anyone else do a job they should be doing themselves. It is disgraceful there is no other word for it.
