You’ll be glad to know that we’re almost there. The new Centro Canino in Es.Pil.Lari isn’t open yet, but we’re getting really close.
No, really!
Back in the 1970s in Britain, British Rail had a slogan; I think it was ‘We’ll get you there’. Posters with that message were on billboards at every railway station. Graffiti artists immediately began adding extra words, such as ‘eventually’ ‘sooner or later’ or ‘but maybe not today’.
The opening date for the New Centro Canino has a bit of good old British Rail about it, we’re trying our hardest, but getting open has taken longer (much longer) than we first anticipated. It is going to happen though, and soon.
It’s been a bit of an ongoing saga hasn’t it? Rome wasn’t built in a day and the Centro Canino hasn’t been built in a year, but everything is almost 100% ready and now we’re just waiting for the authorities to tick a few boxes, ask us to make a few last moment changes and then give us the much-awaited licence to open.
Since last month, quite a lot has been going on. Even though we’re not open and do not have dogs at the centre, we’ve still managed to re-home quite a lot of dogs.
For instance, in C’an Pastilla, there’s been quite an on-going problem regarding stray and wild dogs. We managed to get hold of some recently-born puppies, take them off of the street and find them good homes. The puppies are now all very healthy, happy and hopefully have good lives to look forward to.
Volunteers have helped make the gardens at the new centre look prettier and much more pleasing to the eye. Just a year ago, the place was an abandoned disused pigsty (when I was young, my mum often told me my room looked like a pigsty, but she had no idea, my bedroom was NEVER as messy as the New Centro Canino was in 2005).
Now, the whole place looks quite amazing, although it’ll be a few years still, ‘til the whole project is complete. The luxury homes for the cats in our care, for instance, are still behind schedule.
The important thing is though – soon, we’ll be ready to open, and the sooner we open the sooner we’ll be able to re-home more and more abandoned dogs and cats.
Although we’re not allowed to take in dogs or cats (yet), past members and the public are very welcome to visit us for a look around. If you’re picking someone up from the airport, maybe you could leave 10-20 minutes earlier and come along and see us. Just call ahead to make sure there’s someone available to show you around.
Bring some carrots, if you can. Our donkey and the horses all really appreciate a carrot or two.
Thanks. And hopefully, before October comes, I’ll have some good news on the actual re-opening date for you.
Andrew
