Dear Friends
As the year 2006 draws to a close, we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel and, thanks to your unwavering support – whether by way of donations, voluntary work or other means – our new refuge is at last a reality!
We can now tell you that most of the building work is finished and we are very proud of it. All our rescued animals are living in comfort. Unfortunately, the beautiful planned cattery and cat quarantine area are are not yet completed because we have gone over our budget due to the high cost of construction work in Mallorca.
However, we hope to complete the work early in 2007 and with your continued help and support, for which we will always be grateful, we should be able to reach our goal.
Our application for a “Nucleo Zooligico” has recently been approved by the Department of Agriculture, which means that we can officially house more animals.
Although this year we have had to concentrate our efforts on the huge task of building the new refuge, we have still managed to continue rescuing, caring for and re-homing abandoned, neglected and cruelly treated animals, thus giving them a second chance and the opportunity of a better life.
One day we received a call from a family in England asking if we could rescue two abandoned Siamese cats which they had been feeding during their stay in Deya.
They feared the cats might die of disease, hunger or cold. When we arrived we found two bedraggled little creatures, one fully grown, but very thin, the other a tiny kitten, sitting forlornly by a rubbish dump.
Fortunately, the rescue attempt was successful and both have since recovered from cat flu, are putting on weight and are gradually getting used to humans again. The kind family who alerted us of their plight are hoping to give both “Rhubarb” and “Custard” (as they have named the cats) a new home in the UK.
Then there is “Tito”, a German Shepherd who had been so badly beaten that it took months of treatment and care to cure his wounds.
The mental scars will probably be with him forever. He was so terrified of people that he just cowered in a corner and dared not eat his food with anyone around.
The look of fear and sadness in his eyes will haunt us forever. We thought that he could never be adopted, but happily we were wrong. He has found peace in a loving new home with one of the volunteers who helped to save his life. The two have a very special bond.
“Orejas” is a beautiful white rabbit who was simply dumped in a busy car park in Palma!
Once we have completed the enclosures for small animals he will have lots of space to run around in, as will the other rabbits, hens and ducks at the refuge.
Majestic, the 28 year old horse, and Grisa, the donkey with deformed legs, have both settled in and spend most of their time grazing contentedly.
The Centro Canino Internacional is starting to get back on track with the work initiated by Jane Reynolds more than 30 years ago. A plaque is being made in memory of Jane and her animals, which will take pride of place, alongside the RSPCA and WSPA association membership plaques in our office.
Needless to say, you are all welcome to visit the new refuge (your refuge) at any time to see for yourselves what has been achieved. We can never thank you enough for making it possible.
We will keep you informed of our progress and you can find out more about what is happening on this web site.
In the meantime, we would like to wish you Peace and Happiness for Christmas and the NewYear.
Sharon, Tim, Hashauna, Alaye’ and Iyana Richardson
