Volunteer Opportunities
You can play a key role in helping to run our animal rescue centre.
Volunteers run the Centro Canino, so if you want to meet new people, do something really worthwhile and enjoy yourself in the company of appreciative and loving dogs and cats – your active support is very, very welcome.
Whether it’s cat socialising, dog walking, adoption counseling, humane education visits to schools, fundraising, animal assisted therapy or general office support, the Centro Canino has a volunteer opportunity that’s just right for you!
Your help in the shelter, out in the neighborhoods of Southern Mallorca, or in your own home can make a world of difference for the animals. For many years now, the cats and dogs of the Centro Canino have come to depend on the warmth and generosity of our volunteers.
If you love animals and can give us three hours a week for at least three months, we can promise you good feelings and fun. Look over these Volunteer Programmes – then give us a ring or send us an email, or simply come along to the new shelter. Let’s see how we can work together.
Over the years dedicated volunteers from Spain, Britain, France, Denmark and Germany have made the Centro Canino one of Spain’s most successful animal welfare organisations.
Ideally volunteers make a commitment to work three hours a week for at least three months; but if you’re frequently traveling between (for instance) England and Spain (maybe you have a holiday home here and you’re only over for a few weeks at a time), please do still get in contact – we’ll work something out.
The important thing is for you to meet us, meet the animals you’ll be helping, and then you’ll almost be guaranteed to want to join in with our mission. Making unhappy dogs happy, turning sad cats into contented cats, is such a worthwhile, life affirming, decent, good thing to do. Here are some of the possibilities. Contact us for more information.
- Cat Socialiser and Adoption Counselor – Spend time with cats and kittens in the kitty apartments at our new centre, giving them the love and attention they need as they wait for a home. Help greet visitors who’re looking to adopt a cat or kitten. Help match potential adopters with cats.
- Dog Volunteers – Provide the dogs with love, companionship, attention, exercise and training. Walk and socialise dogs. Assist with dog playgroups. Take dogs on field trips outside the shelter. Teach basic skills that will help dogs find a home more quickly and stand them in good stead throughout their life.
- Foster Parenting – Foster volunteers provide a temporary home (usually 1-4 weeks) for animals that are either sick or injured or too young to be adopted. Some of the animals that need fostering have medical problems. The Centro Canino provides for the animals’ medical needs.
- Animal Assisted Therapy – Volunteers take their own pets to visit people with special needs including the elderly in care homes, the seriously ill and patients in hospitals and rehabilitation centers. This is an outreach programme that we believe could be beneficial. It’s new for us, can You help?
- Humane Education – When did you first realise that you loved animals? Help the Centro Canino’s dogs and cats make friends for the future by becoming a Humane Education Volunteer. Together we can be certain that children in Mallorca are learning about dogs and cats from the best source possible – the dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers of the Centro Canino. In the next months, we aim to approach every school on the island, inviting them to allow us to do a special informative presentation to their classes. Teaching children in a friendly easy way, how to appreciate animals, how to treat animals and about the responsibilities of owning a pet. Does this sound like something you’d like to get involved with?
- Home Inspection Visitors – If you have some spare time, you can make a real difference by becoming one of our home visit inspectors.
- Drivers & Car-Boot Sale Volunteers – Your help driving, picking up goods which people donate for us to sell at the car-boot sales which our volunteers run for us, would be truly appreciated. Or maybe you want to run a sale yourself? If you work in, or own a shop, bar, restaurant or practically any business, maybe you could have one of our collection tins for members of the public to make small cash contributions.
- Fundraisers – Got any bright ideas about how we can raise money for our animals and raise awareness for our cause at the same time? We’d love for you to host parties on our behalf, or how about organizing a quiz night? Use your imagination and be a fundraiser for the Centro Canino.
This is just a basic resume of the different ways volunteers help at the Centro Canino, but there are loads of other options. The most important thing is for you to become involved, then we can decide where your talents lay. Please contact us soon. Thank you.
